Micro-narratives with Story Dice

WHAT

Create short stories, poems, or lyrics using story dice.

YOU WILL NEED:

Paper, a pen or pencil, a set of story dice

Stories are often the basis for a work of art. Whatever you’re creating, sometimes it helps to find a little story inspiration to begin with...

1. Roll a die and begin a story using the first picture as inspiration.

2. Try interpreting some of the images laterally. For instance, if you get the image of a plane, it could signify someone speaking plainly in conversation, something in the story taking flight, or convey a holiday, business trip, or a political point about climate change. It doesn’t necessarily have to explicitly mention the word "plane." Challenge yourself to use the word on the dice as inspiration for something else without directly incorporating it into the narrative.

3. Continue rolling the dice and add to the story until you have a narrative that you're satisfied with.

4. Write down your story, poem, or lyrics.
